Why People Struggle with Math And What We Can Do About It

Understanding why is the first step.

Anxiety towards mathematics does not necessarily stem from difficulty. It develops when unrealistic expectations are imposed upon learners; when students are compared to one another, expected to memorize seemingly random facts and procedures, and pushed forward before the previous ideas are truly understood.

Every grade has a curriculum that is meant to be completed. New concepts build on previous ones, and there is an unspoken expectation that students "should already know this." That expectation is fuel for the doubt, fear and anxiety that so many people feel towards mathematics. Once it begins, it compounds year after year as the gaps continue to grow.

The Concept-First Approach

While traditional math instruction is organized by grade level and curricular requirements, a concept first approach focuses on teaching mathematical ideas through complete learning progressions. We work on developing concepts from the ground up. Students are given the time and support they need to truly understand what they are doing, making connections between ideas rather than simply following steps.

When teaching is focused on concepts rather than grade-level expectations, students build a stronger relationship with numbers and mathematics. A working understanding of place value, fractions, and multiplication means you can confidently tackle more advanced topics without the gaps that often create frustration and anxiety.

This approach allows you to move at your own pace, sometimes revisiting earlier ideas, other times exploring beyond your grade level. When understanding comes before moving on, math can become something meaningful and logical, not just a checklist of skills to get through.

Whether you're 8, 18, or 80, it's not too late to change your relationship with mathematics.

What People Have Said About My Teaching

Luc Harvey (Civil Engineer with KWL)

2014  Graduate from Howe Sound Secondary School.

"You were my favourite teacher throughout all of grade school, not just in math. You made the exercises fun, the teaching engaging, and you were always happy to give some background/purpose/application to the equations and formulas we were learning. I always looked forward to your class throughout the years that you taught me. I would also say that your teaching style and the effect it had on my enjoyment of math definitely played a part in me deciding to go into the field of engineering."

Lisa McCullough

"David is an exceptional teacher, and more importantly, he is a fabulous human. His deep understanding of the importance of personal connections with learners ensures he always leads from the heart. This is so crucial in learners feeling safe to engage in learning that is challenging for them. David also creates personal access points for learners by using a variety of approaches in his instructional design. David is also very confident with the reasoning and skills associated with mathematics. He can easily support other educators with their learning and adapt for the variety of ways learners approach new learning. I hired David as a lead math teacher and would highly recommend him."
